The Director of the African Migration Observatory meet with the Special Envoy for Migration
Ambassador Dr. Namira Negm, Director of the African Migration Observatory, met with Mr. Peter Schuurman, Special Envoy for Migration at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hague. During the meeting, the Ambassador discussed the role of the African Migration Observatory and highlighted its importance in implementing international agreements on migration and migrants. The Ambassador emphasized that the Observatory's priority is to support African Union member states in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data on migration, which can help to develop evidence-based migration policies within the African Union (AU).
The Ambassador provided an overview of the Observatory's work, including capacity-building programs in several African countries. She also mentioned that the Observatory has been holding joint workshops with representatives of regional economic blocs to develop a roadmap for building regional databases on migration to, from, and within Africa. The Ambassador stressed that climate migration, the protection of migrants, and labor migration are considered priorities, and cooperation with international partners is necessary to address these issues.
During the meeting, Mr. Peter Schuurman expressed his appreciation for the collaboration between the Netherlands and the African Migration Observatory. He acknowledged the Observatory's significant role in supporting policy-making processes with evidence-based approach. Mr. Schuurman also emphasized the importance of fostering cooperation between the European Union, its member states, and the African Union, as well as strengthening bilateral ties with African countries. Mr. Schuurman highlighted the need for establishing a mutually beneficial partnership between the African Migration Observatory and the Netherlands.
